Hello and welcome to Katalon Academy. In this video, I'll give you a quick introduction to the test automation platform. Let's start with Katalon Studio, the free and all-in-one test automation solution that meets all testing needs, from APIs, web, desktop, and mobile applications with great reporting capabilities trusted by more than 65,000 companies and 850,000 testers worldwide.

Hi everyone, today we're going to walk you through how to use Katalon Recorder. It's a lightweight yet powerful web extension with the ability to record and playback, and export the script into various scripting languages. More specifically, we'll demonstrate the following capability directly on Chrome. The first is automating basic workflow with 'Record' and 'Playback'. The second is advanced test execution with data-driven tests. And finally, visualize a test result with Katalon TestOps, our forefront test orchestration platform. Let's get started!

Before you start, first you have got to install the extension on your web. It's pretty simple. You can either access your Chrome web store or you can go through Katalon.com/katalon-recorder-ide like shown here. Click that button and Katalon Recorder is installed in your browser.

To access Katalon Recorder, click on the puzzle icon on the right corner, then click on the Katalon Recorder icon, and by default the screen will appear. To begin, click on the 'Record' button on the top menu and every interaction you make on the website will be recorded by Katalon Recorder.

So let's say I'm looking for a one-month vacation spot for myself. So I'll pick the location, dates, and vacation for one and these are some places that Airbnb gives me. Now to stop the recording, click on the puzzle icon. Open Katalon Recorder and click on stop. Right-click on the new test case. You can modify newly created test cases, add a new one, delete the test case, or play the test case again. Here I'll rename it and then I'll click on the 'Play' button to playback the test case so you can see my actions are perfectly recorded and every action of the flow in the screen are in greens, meaning that all of these steps pass.

You can also see the execution log underneath here. And this successful test case concludes the basic demonstration of 'Record' and 'Playback' features. But what if you have thousands of similar test cases to record with different data input? This is where Katalon Record's advanced function Data-Driven Testing comes into play. Just like its name, data-driven tests are using the same test case for multiple databases, hence saving time in creating and maintaining the tests in the long run.

So let's say I'm a developer at Airbnb and I just deploy some new changes for the search feature. Therefore, I want to test to see if that feature functioned correctly with different cities as variables. So, let's start another Katalon Recorder test case on Airbnb. As a sample for this test case, I'll search for New York and Airbnb takes me to the result page. Now I'll stop the recording and play back the test case just to make sure it passes. It's all green, so we're good for now.

to continue my test cases with other cities, this is where I create my data-driven test script with the main variable is the city in the United States. To create a data-driven script, first we must have a text file. You can use a text editor for this. In this example, I'll create a file from notepad, give your data variable a name. In this case, I'll name mine 'city' and then type the name of the city I want to test right next to it.

When I'm done, I'll save my file with the JSON tag. Do note that your file has to have either a JSON or CSV extension in order for Katalon Recorder to read. All I have to do now is add the top command telling Katalon Recorder to read the text file I just created. The command to use here is the load variable (loadVars). The target is the file you just created, data.json. On the value input, change it to the name of the variable in the JSON file. Like in this example, 'New York' will be replaced with ${city}.

If you got it right, where the value used to be should now be replaced with the name of the variable. Lastly, don't forget to add the file you just created into Katalon Recorder. In this case, it's a previous JSON file. Now, let's play back the test to see the data-driven script in action.

Similarly, you can use Katalon Recorder to test any number of cities that you wish. You can also access the variable tab to see the final input value. In this case, it is the last city of Atlanta. If you want to search for a thousand other cities, simply access back to your text file and add in the new cities that you want, and that will save you a ton of time.

Now that you've done all the tests, what if you want to pull some advanced insight for your tests for in-depth review? Katalon Recorder has the ability to integrate with Katalon TestOps, a forefront AI-back analytics and test orchestration platform. To start the integration, first you must have to have a Katalon account connected. If you haven't had an account, go to our website and create one for free to access this feature.

Since I already have an account, I'll go ahead and migrate all the test information I have here into Katalon TestOps. On the upper tab, click on the 'Report' button, select the project where you want to keep your analytics, click 'Upload'. When the upload is finished, Katalon TestOps will automatically pop up in the next browser.
Here you have access to all the analytics and information of all the test run you uploaded, including this most recent one and all the previous ones. Furthermore, you also have a line chart showing the duration of each test run, the status of each test run to see the last test cases pass more or fail more as you move forward, giving you a holistic trend picture of all of your testing process.

Hi everyone, in this video, I'll show you the differences between Katalon Recorder and Selenium Recorder. Now just simply click on the 'Record' button to start recording a test case. In this example, I'll enter airbnb.com, then perform all other testing steps, while Katalon Recorder immediately captures my action as scripted steps. When the site is fully loaded, I'll add a verification step. Right-click on the text that you want to verify, click on 'Katalon Recorder', then click on 'verifyText' on the menu and that simple action completes a test case. Congratulations! You've just created an automated test in Katalon Recorder.

Here, I'll play back the test without stopping the record and it works while on the left-hand side, the current active browser tab shows you the web under test in real-time, very convenient right? And it's done. Your first automated test has been executed successfully. So in conclusion, with Katalon Recorder, you can start recording a test immediately and playback without friction. So what about Selenium IDE?

OK, let's then put a project name, save it. Next, a base URL, I'll use the same URL that is airbnb.com, and then start recording. Here we go. Let's search for a place in Atlanta. Right-click on 'Selenium IDE', choose 'Verify' then 'Text' on the context menu to verify a text that's presented on the screen. Done. So now let's stop it now. You need to define a name for the scripted test. For this one, I'll name it 'TC1'. Now, I'll play my newly created test case. In Selenium IDE, a new browser window is going to open to run the test.

Back to Katalon Recorder, you can see it runs a test on the current active tab. In conclusion, Selenium IDE does have some excessive steps when it comes to recording tests while Katalon Recorder has the same functionality as IDE but with more user freedom and immediate start.

Now, let's move on to how Katalon Recorder and Selenium IDE support manual testing. I will illustrate closely why executing tests on the same browser bring great benefit for you as a manual tester. Here on Katalon Recorder, I'll manually execute the first test step by inputting 'Atlanta' into the search box. Then, I'll run the test from the second step by right-clicking on this step, and then choose 'Play from here'. As you can see, Katalog Recorder runs the chosen step smoothly. You can see in the logs, it executes from the click action step which are the two final steps: click on the search buttons and then verify.

So what about Selenium IDE? For comparison, let's bring back Selenium IDE. I will do the same thing, inputting 'Atlanta' into the search box, then have Selenium IDE play from the step 'Click on the search button'. As you can see, it opens a new window and then the test will be stuck here until timeout. This is because Selenium IDE opens a new browser window. It leads to a different browser that doesn't have the same test precondition. Therefore, your test will fail after timeout. Now, on that same new browser, let's play the full test again. And it works. Now you can see that Katalon Recorder can support manual testing by playing from any step when the tester has done the precondition, while Selenium IDE, unfortunately, cannot.

On Katalon Recorder and Selenium IDE, you can only see the last test result. But what if you want to check the historical information of this test case?
While both Selenium IDE and Katalon Recorder don't support this feature. Katalon Recorder, however, has the ability to integrate with Katalon TestOps, an AI test orchestration and analytic platform. So let me show you how Katalon Recorder can do that.
Simply click on the 'Report' button on the top menu to upload the test result into TestOps. To connect with TestOps, you need to have a Katalon account. If you don't have one, go to our website and create one for free to access this feature. In this case, I just need to log in with my credential.

With TestOps, you can create many organizations and in each organization, you can create many projects to manage. Here are the test results that I ran before. Now, back to Katalon Recorder to upload the test result to TestOps to see the insights.
Close the popup and then click on the 'Report' button again. Select the project. Here I have only one project that I want to upload the report into which is the first project. Finally, click on upload, close the message then go to TestOps to check out your result.
